Pao-Chang graduated from the department of drama and theatre, National Taiwan University and received his master’s in music theatre from Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. He served the co-artistic director at Tainaner Ensemble between 2009-2018. Learning has always been at the top of Pao-Chang’s priority when it comes to his career, exposing himself to various practitioners and companies with diverse views on theatre. But with learning also comes teaching, as Pao-Chang has spent time teaching youth theatre, universities, and master classes abroad, where he puts to practice all that he has learned.   

 

Pao-Chang Tsai is frequently seen as a creator equipped with three talents- playwrighting, directing and acting, and has worked with the National Symphony Orchestra, Horse Dance Theatre and Cloud Gate Dance Company. Since 2009, Pao-Chang has been invited as the co-artistic director to collaborate with Po-Shen Lu at Tainaner Ensemble. The list of productions he has been involved in have won him great recognition- these include: Taishin Arts Award: the Creative Society’s <Who-Ga-Sha-Ga> that has won the best production of the year, Tainaner Ensemble’s Shakespeare Unplugged 3: Macbeth has been listed as the top 10 performing arts production of the year. His Musical script <Mulan> has not only won the first price of the 3rd Tainan Literature Award but also received its revival at Taipei National Theatre and was invited to Singapore Sentosa Theatre for its critically acclaimed 36 shows.   Additionally, his six-hour TV Series inspired play <K24> has not only made a milestone in Taiwan’s theatre history, and also received great reviews from theatre professionals and audiences from China and Taiwan. <K24> was invited as the opening show for the 8th Chinese Theater Festival. In 2011, Pao-Chang was invited to direct <Re/turn> for Eslite Bookstore with its 30 sold-out performances and 4-time revival up today.   The CommonWealth Magazine has selected Pao-Chang Tsai as the Future Young Leader in Performing arts. He also went to America Repertory Theater at Harvard University for further study in Voice and Speech sponsored by Asian Cultural Council and visited Moscow Art Theatre for three months. 

 

Pao-Chang completed his residency at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2015. His first solo show <Solo Date> received its premiere in Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016 and was invited to be the opening show of Linz Electronica Festival, Austria and San Francisco International Arts Festival (2018). In 2017, he was invited to attend International Forum at Berlin Theatertreffen and a guest performer at Starlight Seoul Musical Festival. Recently he fulfilled his playwright-in-residence at Ashland, Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a research on musical theatre training pedagogy at New York City as a grantee of Asian Cultural Council.   

 

Pao-Chang has published five stage scripts: <Q&A Episode 1>, <Q&A Episode 2>, <Mulan: The Musical>, <K24 Season 1> and <Re/turn>.  He has been also lecturing in universities and conducting various workshops in Taiwan, France, and the U.S.A., focusing on acting, voice training and speech. He also assisted several master classes conducted by world famous artists such as Simon Mcburney (Complicite), Roberta Carreri (Odin Teatret).
